Post-modern a term brandished about a lot these days no more so by my good self. Recently I gave an assembly in my old high school and I looked simply at the verse ‘Taste and see that the Lord is Good’ and it struck me what a post-modern statement. In a culture today were people are so into testers, previews, freebies, try before you buy?As consumers we always ask ourselves is this product worth it? How will it benefit me? Is it value for money? Is it any good? I heard it was rubbish? Here father God is saying Come try me and you will realise I am good, and I’m not what you’ve heard!
Its amazing the preconceptions and the stereotypes people have on what they think God is? Church and Christian life? Many have had bad experiences in churches our through contact with Christians that haven’t practiced what they preached, or more to the point: what the Bible preaches! But in this verse God is calling us to lay aside our stereotypical ideas and what are friends have told us the past hurts we hold on to and even what people might think, and taste and see?
I asked had anyone in the assembly hall that day “had anyone ever tasted Irn Bru?”, and one little boy placed his hand up in the back row.
Irn Bru is Scotland national fizzy drink for those who don’t know, and is the only drink in the world that outsells Coca Cola. Only in Scotland though!
This guy came to the Front and for the first time in front of a few hundred of his peers tasted Irn Bru: End Result: The boy loved it actually, he liked it that much I got slightly concerned that it might be the start of an addiction to the Bru!
But he would never have known whether it was good or not unless he actually made a conscious decision to try! To Taste and See, to give it a go?
God promises taste him and you will see that God is good.Gods word applies today and is applicable to the post-modern generation!
